My patient told me she was going to buy someone's testicles for good luck
4 months ago
I just finished my shift at the hospital and my mind is still processing what one patient told me today. A Nigerian woman, maybe in her 50s, came in for a routine checkup. She was very agitated, kept looking around like someone was following her.
I asked her what was wrong, and she said her neighbour had offered to sell her a man's testicles for N500,000. She said the neighbour claimed it would bring her wealth and make her husband stop cheating. I just stood there. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I asked her if she believed it, and she said 'Aunty, I don hear say many people don buy am and their lives change.' I told her the Nigerian Medical Association has come out to say this thing is not real. They dismissed these claims as shocking and bizarre. But she looked at me like I was the one who didn't understand.
Na wa oh. The things people will believe when they are desperate. I told her, my dear, if testicles could make a man faithful, half the men in Lagos would be walking around empty. She just shook her head and walked away. I pray she didn't go and give that woman her money. This country e no easy at all.
