Two years ago, I was sitting in my office in Kano going through the books for Northern AgroConnect. Something didn't add up. A withdrawal of ₦1.2 million that I never authorized. My heart started beating fast. I checked again and again. The money was gone. The only person who had access to that account besides me was my childhood friend, Zainab. We grew up together in the same neighborhood. She was my partner in this business. I called her and she denied everything. Said it must be a bank error. I wanted to believe her. But I checked the bank records and saw her signature. She had been taking money for months. Small amounts at first. Then bigger ones. I confronted her again and she broke down crying. She said she had debts from her husband's business that she needed to cover. I was torn. This was my friend since we were 10 years old. But the farmers who trusted us with their produce were waiting for payment. I had to choose. I reported her to the board and she was removed. We don't talk anymore. It still hurts when I think about it. But I learned that trust is valuable, but integrity is more important.
