I helped my cousin japa and now she's ignoring me like I don't exist
4 months ago
My little cousin, Funmi, came to me two years ago crying. She said life in Ibadan was choking her, that she needed to leave Nigeria before she went mad. I felt her pain. I have been there. So I helped her with everything , the visa application, the IELTS prep, the bank statement, the accommodation letter. I even paid for her first three months rent in Manchester out of my own pocket. God knows I did not have it easy but I said, na family.
She landed in November 2023. I went to pick her at Heathrow, cooked her amala and ewedu, showed her how the Oyster card works, took her to the job centre. For the first few months she would call me every day. Aunty Bose this, Aunty Bose that. I was happy. I thought I was raising someone.
Then she got a job at a care home. Started making her own money. The calls became once a week. Then once a month. Now I have not heard from her since March. I sent her a message last week to ask how she is doing. She left it on read. My husband said I should not let it worry me, that some people are just like that. But it is hard. I did not help her for thanks but I did not expect to become a ghost either. This diaspora life can turn people cold. Na wa.
