Tinubu just signed new NIMC law , your NIN is about to become even more important

So President Bola Tinubu signed the NIMC Act 2026 today at the State House. This is not small thing o. The old law from 2007 don become outdated and now NIMC get expanded powers to be the main authority for digital identity in Nigeria.

Under this new law, NIMC is now the Root Certification Authority for Nigeria's Public Key Infrastructure. That big English means they will handle digital certificates, encryption, and secure identity verification for both government and private sector. Your NIN remains the foundational identity credential , one person one identity.

NIMC say this will help cybersecurity, data protection, and financial inclusion. But I just hope say the data protection part is true because with all this digital power, we need to know our information is safe. The law is supposed to align us with global best practices but we know how Nigeria government dey handle our data sometimes.
