NDC deregistration: Peter Obi's enemies are behind this court ruling
4 months ago
I just finished watching the interview NDC National Secretary Ikenna Enekweizu granted on Channels Television's Politics Today yesterday, and I must say the man did not hold back. He directly accused certain persons who cannot stand Peter Obi of being behind the Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that seeks to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections. According to Enekweizu, every Nigerian knows what is happening in the political space today is predetermined by people who do not want proper contest.
He said something that really struck me: "You don't need anybody to tell you that Peter Obi will be our presidential candidate. It's a choice of a gross majority of Nigerian people." Then he added that those who know they do not stand a chance against Obi in a free and fair election are the ones pushing this deregistration case. This is not a small allegation. This is the party secretary calling out a conspiracy to remove his candidate from the ballot by judicial means.
Now I ask you, is this a genuine legal issue with the NDC's registration or is this the beginning of a pattern where courts are used to eliminate opposition before votes are even cast? We saw similar tactics in the past with other parties and candidates. The question is whether our judiciary will allow itself to be used as a weapon against political competition.
