I Sold Fake Drugs in Kano for Two Years. The Day I Was Caught, I Thanked God.

Back in 2021, I was 27 and my tailoring business had collapsed. I had a wife and a one-year-old son, and our landlord was threatening to lock us out. I couldn't look my wife in the eye. That was when my childhood friend, Musa, introduced me to the business of repackaging expired medicines and selling them to small pharmacies in Sabon Gari. At first, I told myself it was just temporary. Just until we got back on our feet. But the money was too sweet , I was clearing 80,000 naira a week. I knew people were swallowing paracetamol and malaria drugs that had expired two years ago. I knew some of them were children. But I blocked it out. I would buy a bag of rice, pay the rent, and tell myself I was a provider. One day, a woman came to the pharmacy I supplied. She was crying. Her three-year-old had died after taking the malaria medicine I had repackaged. I stood there, pretending to be a customer, and watched her beg the pharmacist to help her. Omo, that night I couldn't sleep. I saw that child's face every time I closed my eyes. The next morning, I went to the police station and confessed everything. They arrested me, Musa, and two others. I spent six months in prison. My wife left with my son. But when I came out, I felt clean for the first time in two years. I would rather die poor than carry that kind of blood on my hands again. May God forgive me, because I have not forgiven myself.
