My neighbor's generator has a more consistent schedule than my last three employers
4 months ago
I live in Yaba, and my neighbor Mr. Adebayo runs his generator like he's managing a national grid. 6pm to 10pm sharp, Monday to Saturday. If NEPA takes light at 5:58pm, that generator is already vibrating before my UPS finishes beeping. The man has a timetable pasted on his wall, I saw it when I went to borrow salt last week.
Meanwhile, the startup I consulted for last year changed our standup meeting time four times in one month. The CEO would send a Slack message at 9:47pm saying 'team, let's pivot to 7am effective tomorrow.' Bros, 7am. In Lagos traffic. I had to wake up at 4:30 to prepare. The generator man has never once missed his 6pm start time. Not during Sallah, not during the fuel scarcity that had everyone crying last year. Mr. Adebayo's generator is more reliable than any employer I have ever worked for, and I am not even joking.
Maybe I should just apply for a job at Mr. Adebayo's house. The pay might be in groundnut oil and goodwill, but at least the working hours are stable.
