Oshiomhole backs firing squad for kidnappers in Edo

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has thrown his weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo's proposal to execute convicted kidnappers by firing squad in Edo State. Speaking at the APC local government campaign launch in Auchi, Oshiomhole argued that states have the constitutional right to determine punishments for state offences like kidnapping and murder.

He said the move to replace hanging with firing squad is meant to serve as a deterrent. According to him, "Those who don't want to suffer that, should not come to Edo state." He also reiterated his support for state police, saying vigilantes with old-fashioned guns cannot confront criminals carrying AK-47s.

This proposal has reopened the debate on the death penalty in Nigeria. While some see it as a necessary crackdown on violent crime, others are questioning whether the state should have the power to decide who lives or dies. Is this the kind of strong leadership we need, or a slippery slope?
