My neighbour's son just bought a car with loan, I am worried

I saw my neighbour's son yesterday, the one we call Tunde. He just bought a brand new Toyota Camry, 2023 model. Fine car. But I know the boy, he works as a dispatch rider for a logistics company. He told me he took a loan from one of those digital lenders to buy the car. I just shook my head.

The Yoruba say, a man who borrows to eat will sell his farm to repay. I have seen it in my time in the civil service. Many young officers would take loans to buy cars, to impress people. Before you know it, the loan collectors are at the office gate. One man even lost his job because the creditors embarrassed him in front of the permanent secretary. The car was repossessed after six months.

I know the economy is hard. I know a young man wants to look good. But ishe, a car that you cannot afford to maintain is not an asset, it is a burden. I pray for Tunde, but I am worried for him. When I see these young people chasing things they cannot sustain, I remember what my father told me: patience is the father of wisdom. Does anyone else see this pattern around them?
