Pastor Adeboye's Trump comparison on insecurity is deeply troubling
4 months ago
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the leader of RCCG, said something at a gala in Washington yesterday that has not left my mind. He said Nigerians should not expect President Bola Tinubu to wear khaki and fight insecurity. That all Tinubu needs to do is give orders like his friend Trump does from the White House.
I have great respect for Daddy Adeboye. But this comparison is dangerous. When Trump tells the military to bomb Iran, he is the Commander-in-Chief of a superpower with a functional system. Here in Nigeria, the problem is not that Tinubu is not wearing khaki. The problem is that the orders he gives are not reaching the ground. Terrorism is getting nearer to Adeboye's own area and he admitted things have gotten much worse. Yet he says the criticism against Tinubu is unfair.
This is the kind of theology that protects power instead of speaking truth to it. If a pastor cannot question the president when insecurity is destroying lives, then what is the purpose of the prophetic voice? Am I the only one who finds this deeply troubling? Let's argue this.
