This was back in 2022, during my final year at UI. I was 22, a guy, and I had never told anyone how much I hated my jawline. It was too wide, too square. Every time I looked in the mirror I felt like a frog. My friends would say I was fine but I knew they were lying. I saw this woman on Instagram who did 'bone contouring' , no hospital, no license, just her apartment in Bodija. She said she could shave down my jawbone with a tool she called a 'bone file.' I paid her 120,000 naira from my savings. The procedure was hell. She cut inside my mouth, filed my jaw while I was awake. The pain was like nothing I have felt before or since. For two weeks I could not open my mouth properly. I told my roommates I had a tooth infection. I was eating pap and bread soaked in water. Omo, the swelling was so bad I looked worse than before. After it healed, the shape barely changed. Maybe a little. But not the 120k worth of change. I still look in the mirror sometimes and see that same wide jaw. But I have stopped trying to cut pieces of myself away. The lesson I learned is harsh: some things you hate about yourself, nobody else even notices. I almost ruined my face permanently because of a problem that only existed in my head. If you are thinking of doing something extreme to your body because you feel ugly, please sit down first and breathe. The mirror is lying to you.
