The petrol price talk we need to have as a people
4 months ago
My sister in Ibadan called me this morning, she was so vexed. She said the price of fuel is still high and the analyst on TV is just talking grammar. I told her, my dear, we have to be realistic. When I was coming to the UK in 2008, I remember the struggle for fuel in Lagos. Now I see these lists of countries with cheap petrol and Nigeria is not even there. Na wa oh.
I was telling my husband last night, the Ghanaian one, he said in Accra the price is also high. So it is not just us. But the thing that gets me is how we Nigerians always expect things to change overnight. We are a patient people but this one is testing everybody. My mother in Ibadan says she now budgets for fuel like she budgets for food. That is not normal.
God is faithful, we will see better days. But until then, we have to manage. I tell my siblings back home, find ways to reduce cost. Carpool, use public transport more, plan your trips. E no easy but we have to survive. I just pray the government finds a lasting solution soon.
