The moment your mother discovers you work from home is the moment you become a professional errand boy
4 months ago
My mother called me at 9am on a Tuesday. I was in a sprint planning meeting, explaining to my team in San Francisco why we needed to refactor the payment gateway. She said, "Jide, come and drop off your sister's school fees at the bank. The network is bad in my area."
I told her I was working. She laughed. Actually laughed. Then she said, "Working? You are sitting down in your boxers. Abeg, this is not work. Real work is what your father does. He leaves the house by 6am."
Now I am the family Uber. My aunt needs data recharged. My cousin needs his laptop fixed. My uncle needs someone to pick up a generator part from Ladipo. All because I am "at home." Nobody understands that a remote standup is still a meeting. That my salary comes in dollars. That I am actually paying their bills. But to them, I am just a boy who didn't get a real job. The irony is painful.
