Millennials need to stop acting like we own suffering in this country
4 months ago
I was at a co-working space in Yaba yesterday and overheard two Gen Z guys talking about how they can't afford to move out of their parents house. One of them said something about how rent in Lagos is now a scam and his salary is a joke. A millennial guy near me started shaking his head and muttering about how we suffered more during our time, how at least they have remote work options and crypto and all that.
See ehn, I am a millennial. I graduated into a Nigeria where there were no jobs and the ones available paid 50k. I remember sending out CVs for six months before I got a call back. But the thing is, every generation has its own struggle. Gen Z is dealing with a dollar that is now almost ₦1,400, data prices that make you think twice before streaming anything, and a housing market where a one-bedroom in a bad area costs what my first salary for an entire year used to be. They are not competing with us. They are competing with an economy that makes our own suffering look like a warm-up.
Honestly, this gatekeeping of hardship is tired. Nobody wins the struggle olympics. We all just want to survive and maybe buy a little land before we die. So which generation actually has it worse in this current Nigeria, or are we all just suffering differently?
