2,550 Christians Killed, 2,800 Abducted in First Half of 2026 — Intersociety Report Drops
4 months ago
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has released its 2026 Mid-Year Report, and the figures are staggering. According to the Enugu-based human rights group, at least 2,550 Christians were killed and 2,800 abducted across Nigeria between January and June 2026. They also estimate that 1,050 Muslims were killed and 1,150 abducted in the same period.
Executive Director Emeka Umeagbalasi said the findings are based on a 66-page incident database compiled from field investigations, eyewitness accounts, survivors, community leaders, and more than 120 sources. The report alleges that armed Fulani groups, Boko Haram, ISWAP, Lakurawa, and other jihadist groups are responsible for the attacks. It also claims that about 300 churches were destroyed or abandoned, 10 Christian pastors were killed, and around 800 Christian women and children were forcibly converted to Islam in captivity.
The Catholic Diocese of Wukari in Taraba State alone reportedly lost 217 churches between September 2025 and May 2026, with over 100,000 worshippers displaced. Intersociety has accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect affected communities and of not prosecuting perpetrators or seeking accountability through the International Criminal Court. How many more reports will it take before this government acts?
