I Slept With My Neighbor's Husband for Two Years. The Day She Found Out, She Thanked Me.
I moved to Calabar in 2022 for a job. I was 27, single, staying in a one-bedroom flat in a quiet estate. My neighbor, Mrs. Bassey, was in her late 40s, always smiling, always bringing me pepper soup on Sundays. Her husband, Mr. Bassey, was a quiet man in his early 50s who worked in oil and gas. He traveled a lot.
One evening, he knocked on my door. Said his generator had packed up and he needed to charge his phone. I let him in. That first time, nothing happened. But he started coming back. Borrowing sugar. Asking about my work. Then one night, he kissed me. I knew it was wrong. But I was lonely, and he was gentle in a way that made me feel seen.
It went on for two years. He would come over when she traveled to her village. He gave me money sometimes , 30,000 naira here, 50,000 there. I told myself it was just arrangement. But I started to care for him. We would talk for hours. He told me his marriage was dead, that she knew but didn't care. I believed him.
Then last December, Mrs. Bassey knocked on my door. I thought she had come to fight. But she sat down, looked me in the eye, and said, 'My daughter, I know everything. And I want to thank you.' She told me her husband had been abusive for years. That since he started seeing me, he had stopped hitting her. She said I had taken the heat off her. She asked me to continue.
I moved out the next week. I don't know what I expected , maybe anger, maybe tears. But her gratitude broke something in me. I was just a tool in their marriage. I was never a person to either of them. Omo, the things we do for affection. The things we think are love when they are just convenience. I have not looked at a married man since.
