I Helped a Man Dispose of a Body in Warri. He Paid Me 50k and I Have Never Told Anyone.
This was back in 2021, I was 28 years old and doing okuro okuro jobs around Warri. I had a small keke I used for dropping passengers. One night, around 1am, this man I knew slightly from the neighbourhood flagged me down. He was sweating and his eyes were red. He said his friend had an accident and he needed to move him to the hospital.
When I got to the spot, I saw the body. The head was wrapped in a cloth but there was blood seeping through. I knew immediately this was not an accident. But the man had 50,000 naira in his hand and he said "my brother, help me carry this one small, nobody go know." I took the money. I helped him load the body into my keke. We drove to a bush near Ekpan and we carried it into the creek. I did not ask questions. I did not look at the face.
After we finished, he gave me another 20k and said if I talk, he will come for me. I did not talk. I went home and washed my keke three times. I could not sleep for weeks. Every time I saw a police van I would start shaking. I stopped doing night runs completely.
It has been five years. I still do not know who that person was or what happened. But that night changed something inside me. I learned that when money is too easy, it is carrying something heavy. I have not touched that kind of money since. I work legit now, even if it is small. The nightmares have stopped but the guilt never really leaves. If you ever find yourself in a situation where someone asks you to help them carry something at night, just run. No amount of money is worth the weight of a secret that can bury you.
