Jim Obazee wants Buhari prosecuted posthumously over $6.2m CBN fraud
4 months ago
Jim Obazee, the special investigator appointed by President Tinubu to probe the CBN under Godwin Emefiele, told the FCT High Court today that former President Muhammadu Buhari should be prosecuted posthumously over the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of $6.2 million from the Federal Government's foreign exchange account. Obazee also named former SGF Boss Mustapha, Jibril Abubakar, and CBN official Bashirudeen Maishanu as individuals who should face charges if sufficient evidence exists.
According to Obazee's testimony, a letter purportedly signed by Buhari authorised the release of the funds, and another letter from the SGF's office directed the CBN to pay the money to Jibril Abubakar, a staff member in that office. But Boss Mustapha has denied knowledge of the transaction and claimed the documents were forged. Obazee argued that internal controls at the CBN, including CCTV and BVN systems, should have caught any irregularities, and that Emefiele ought to have been aware of what was happening.
The witness also revealed that Maishanu returned N856,500 to the investigation panel. Justice Hamza Muazu has adjourned the matter until October 20. How can a sitting president's signature end up on a document that the SGF himself says is forged, and nobody is held accountable except the CBN governor?
