I Refused to Join Secret Cult in Warri. My Best Friends Became My Enemies Overnight.

Back in 2018, I was a 300-level student at a federal university in Warri. I had this group of friends from my first year , we did everything together, from night classes to sharing food money. Then one evening, my closest boy, Emeka, took me aside and said the group had been invited to join a certain confraternity. He said it was the only way to 'survive' on campus, to get respect, to never struggle for money again. I told him no. I told him my mother didn't send me to school to carry cutlass. He looked at me like I had slapped his mother. That night, they came to my room , four of them, including Emeka. They said I had to swear in or face the consequences. Omo, I was shaking inside, but I looked them straight in the eye and said, 'I am not joining any cult. If you want to beat me, beat me. But I will not sign my soul away.' They beat me. Broke my ribs, left me bleeding on the floor. Nobody in the hostel helped because everyone was scared. For the rest of that semester, I was isolated. My former friends walked past me like I didn't exist. I ate alone, studied alone, even changed my route to class to avoid them. Fast forward to today: Emeka dropped out after his second year, arrested for armed robbery. Two others are dead. One is in prison. Me? I graduated with a second class upper, working a decent job in Port Harcourt now. My mother still thanks God I didn't join. I look back and I know , the price of saying no was high, but the price of saying yes would have been my life. If you are on that campus and they come for you, run. Do not let anyone convince you that your future is not worth more than their 'brotherhood.'
