I Spent Two Years Pretending to Be Fine While Planning My Own Death. My Sister Saved Me Without Knowing.

Back in 2021, I was 27, living in Abeokuta, working a job I hated at a microfinance bank. Every morning I would wake up, put on my uniform smile, and go sit in that office while something inside me was slowly dying. Nobody knew. Not my mother, not my friends, not even my pastor who kept saying I was "under spiritual attack." By early 2022, I had a plan. I had written letters, picked a date, and even bought the rope. I was just waiting for the right weekend when my sister would travel to Ibadan. I had it all mapped out. The only thing I did not plan for was her showing up at my apartment unannounced on a Wednesday evening with a bag of oranges from the market. She sat on my bed, looked at me, and said: "You look tired. Not the physical tired. The kind that makes you stop laughing." I almost broke down right there. But I held it. I laughed it off, said work was stressing me. She stayed for three hours, talking about nothing and everything. Before she left, she hugged me and said "I love you, don't forget." That night I threw away the letters. Not because she fixed me, but because someone finally saw me. Someone said the thing I needed to hear without me asking. Omo, mental health for this country is not a joke. We are all walking around with cracks inside, pretending the cement is holding. But one person seeing you, truly seeing you, can pull you back from the edge. I am still here. I still struggle. But I am here. If you have a friend who used to laugh and now just smiles, check on them. That smile might be the last thing they are holding onto.
