I am a 34-year-old woman from Ibadan. Married for seven years, two children. My husband is a good man, but he has this thing about money. He believes a wife should not have her own savings. That whatever I earn belongs to the family pot and he will decide how it is spent. Two years ago, I started a small business selling secondhand clothes. I told him I was just helping a friend. But I was actually buying and selling. Every month, I put some profit aside. At first it was just 5,000 naira here, 10,000 there. Then it grew. Now I have N1.2 million in a bank account he does not know about. The account is under my mother's name. If he ever finds out, there will be war. He will say I am stealing from the family. But the truth is, I started hiding it because I got tired of begging him for money to buy sanitary pads for myself. I do not spend it on anything crazy. Just small emergencies. School fees when he was short. My mother's hospital bills. Things he would say are not important. The last time I used part of it was when my daughter needed glasses and he said she was too young for glasses. I know what I am doing is wrong in a marriage. But I also know that if I had not done it, I would have nothing. Not even respect for myself. Some days I wonder if I am the villain in this story. Other days I just look at my children and know I did what I had to do. If you are a married woman reading this, start your own small thing. Even if it is just selling puff-puff. Because the person who controls the money controls everything. And love alone does not pay school fees.
