El-Rufai's wife cried and Peter Obi noticed. Where is Tinubu?
I saw that viral video of Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai crying and I tell you, something shifted in my chest. Peter Obi, who is currently in America for an event, released a statement yesterday through his spokesman Idris Zekeri saying he was moved to tears himself watching her. He said, and I quote: 'I woke this morning in America and was deeply moved by an emotional viral video of Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, prompting deep reflection on our nation's future.'
Now here is the thing. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has been in detention for months. The man is a former governor of Kaduna State. He is not a small boy. Yet his wife has to go on camera begging for justice. Obi is right when he says that in a democracy, bail conditions should not be punitive before trial. Whether you like El-Rufai or not, the principle of fair treatment should hold. Selective justice destroys public trust, and we have seen this pattern before in Nigeria.
Some of you will say El-Rufai deserves what he is getting because of his own actions in office. I hear you. But that is not how the law works. You cannot celebrate rule of law only when it benefits your side. If we allow the government to detain political opponents indefinitely without trial, what stops them from coming for any of us tomorrow? Am I the only one that sees this dangerous precedent?
