The day I discovered my father had a whole other family

I was 34 years old, already a magistrate clerk, when a man walked into my chambers and asked for Joe Nnamani. He looked like my father's younger brother, the same jawline, same way of tilting his head when he speaks. I thought he was a distant cousin from the village.

He sat down and said, 'My name is Chuka Nnamani. I am your brother.' Just like that. My father had a first wife before my mother, a woman nobody in my family ever mentioned. Chuka was born in 1971, three years before me. He grew up in Enugu while I grew up in Ikeja. Same father, different mothers, different worlds.

I didn't know whether to hug him or be angry at my father. I called my mother that evening. She was quiet for a long time, then she said, 'Your father made his choices. But you cannot punish your brother for them.' That was 18 years ago. Chuka and I talk every week now. The law taught me about evidence and proof. But life taught me that blood doesn't need a court order to be family.
