I Was 24 and He Was 41. We Said It Was Nothing for 8 Months. The Lie Broke Us.

Back in 2021, I was 24, fresh from NYSC and posted to a bank in Kano. He was a customer , 41, married with two children, always came in with that calm, unhurried way. We started as 'just talking.' Innocent messages about my day, his business, the heat in Kano. I told myself it was nothing. Just a friendly older man. One evening he asked to see me after work. Said he had a problem with his account. I knew that was a lie. I still went. We sat in his car near the old city gate, and before I could think, he kissed me. I didn't stop him. That night, we crossed a line neither of us could uncross. For eight months, we kept it going. I would leave the bank at 6 p.m., tell my roommates I was going to the gym, and meet him at a small guest house on Ibrahim Taiwo Road. He would give me 30,000 or 45,000 naira each time. I told myself it was just money. But the way he held me after , the way he asked about my mother's health, my younger sister's school fees , that was not part of the arrangement. The moment I knew it was more: he forgot his phone in my bag one night. I saw his wife's message. She was asking if he had eaten. And I felt a jealousy so sharp I could not breathe. That was when I knew. I had fallen for a man who would never be mine. I ended it in December 2021. Told him I was relocating. He did not fight. He just nodded and said, 'I hope you find someone who can give you everything.' That sentence still haunts me. Not because he meant it , because I knew he was wishing me away. To the girl who thinks she can keep her heart out of a situationship: you can't. The body does not lie. The heart follows where the body leads. And sometimes, the only way to win is to walk away before your soul gets tangled in a story that was never written for you.
