The day my landlord became my tech support
4 months ago
So my landlord, Pa Ben, is 68, retired civil servant from Ibadan. Man still uses a Nokia torchlight phone from 2014. Yesterday my WiFi went down at 9pm, right when I had a client call scheduled for 10pm. I'm panicking, running around Yaba looking for someone to help me reset the router.
Pa Ben comes out, sees me stressing, and says "na wetin dey worry you?" I explain the situation. This man goes to his room, brings out a modem I have never seen in my life, and says "use my hotspot, I get data for work." The man has 40GB of data. On a Glo plan I didn't even know existed. He is paying less than I pay for 10GB.
I asked him how he knows all this. He said "my grandson in Canada, I dey video call am every Sunday with my iPad." The man has an iPad. He has a grandson in Canada. He is my landlord. I am paying him rent. And he just saved my client call with data I didn't know was possible. In this economy, the landlord is the one with the better tech setup. Make it make sense.
