Security agents arrested 74-year-old professor at 2am then apologized — Peter Obi reacts

Peter Obi has condemned the arrest and release of Professor Martin Aghaji, a 74-year-old cardiothoracic surgeon who is Nnamdi Kanu's doctor. According to Obi, security operatives stormed the professor's residence at Independent Layout in Enugu around 2 a.m. and arrested him in front of his visiting daughter without any prior invitation.

Obi wrote on his X account that after being taken from Enugu to Lagos and detained for three days, Aghaji was eventually released with an apology — officials reportedly told him they had made a mistake. The former Anambra governor described the incident as disheartening and a reflection of growing disregard for the rule of law in Nigeria.

He warned that treating respected professionals like common criminals will worsen brain drain and further weaken our healthcare system. Obi also recalled a similar case in Akwa Ibom that nearly triggered a nationwide NMA strike. At what point does this pattern of state lawlessness stop?
