Millennials need to stop dating like we are still in 2015
4 months ago
I am sitting in my office after counseling a couple this morning and I just have to say something. The guy is 34, the girl is 29. They have been dating for 5 years. He still hasn't proposed because he wants to be financially stable first. She is tired of waiting. My sister, at what point does stability become a destination you never arrive at?
Look at it this way. In our parents time, they got married with nothing and built together. Now we want to have everything before we start. A car, a house, a business, savings. By the time you have all that, you are 45 and you don't even know the person anymore. You have spent 10 years dating and you are still strangers. The thing about life is, you don't build a life and then find someone to share it. You find someone and build together. That is how our people did it. That is how it works.
I am not saying rush into marriage. I am saying stop using financial stability as an excuse for fear. If you know she is the one after 3 years, what are you waiting for. The economy will not suddenly become perfect next year. The naira will not magically strengthen. So what is the plan. Wait until you are 50 and she has moved on with someone who understood that life happens while you are planning. Gen Zs are dating smarter than us abi. They know that commitment is not about bank balance. It is about willingness to grow together. So millennials, when will we unlearn this fear.
