My neighbour's wife just served him court papers for child neglect
4 months ago
I was locking up my gate this evening when I saw my neighbour, Mr. Chinedu Okafor, standing outside his house with a court summons in his hand. The man was shaking. He said his wife, Mrs. Amara Okafor, had taken him to court for failing to pay school fees for their three children for two terms now.
See ehn, I know Mr. Chinedu lost his job at that logistics company last year. But the law does not care about your circumstances when it comes to children. Section 15 of the Child's Rights Act says a parent has a duty to maintain the child, including providing education. If you cannot pay, you must show the court what steps you are taking. You cannot just fold your hands and expect the system to look away.
I tried to calm him down, told him to get a lawyer and come to court with evidence of his job search. But the man was just pacing up and down, saying his wife has humiliated him. I asked him, is it humiliation or is it your children's future? He did not answer me.
