The day my mother video-called me to confirm I was actually working

My mother calls me at 10am on a Tuesday. I am in the middle of a sprint retro with my team, my camera is on, I am wearing a shirt and tie from the waist up and boxers underneath. Standard remote worker uniform.

She says 'Jide, I need to see your office. Send me a video.' I tell her I am in a meeting. She says 'So you are not working? You are just sitting down?' Then she asks my cousin who lives in Canada to video-call me and confirm I am actually at a desk. My cousin, a pharmacist, calls me and says 'Bro, your mother says you are lying about your job. Abeg just pick up for her.'

I had to explain to my US team that my mother thinks remote work is a scam and that my cousin from Canada is now my HR manager. They found it hilarious. I did not. Nigerian parents genuinely believe if you are not sweating in traffic for two hours, you are not serious.
