The day my own generator almost killed me, and I still paid NEPA
4 months ago
Last week Wednesday, my inverter started beeping at 2am. I wake up, check the app, battery at 12%. So I go outside in my boxers to start the generator. VI at 2am is actually peaceful, no noise, just the security guy sleeping by the gate.
I pull the Gen, it starts first pull. I am feeling like a champion. Go back inside, sleep. Next thing I hear is this loud bang. The generator has jumped its position and is now facing my neighbour's wall, exhaust pipe pointing directly at my window. Carbon monoxide entering my sitting room. My carbon monoxide detector (yes I have one, don't judge) starts screaming. I run outside, the Gen is vibrating like it wants to fly. I quickly turn it off.
Now here is the thing. That same week, NEPA brought light for exactly 4 hours total. I calculated my fuel cost for the week. I spent about ₦28,000 on fuel for a generator that almost killed me, while NEPA collected ₦4,500 from my prepaid meter. The numbers do not add up. I am seriously considering solar but the quote I got was ₦1.8m. My guys, is there a middle class in Lagos or are we just surviving in a simulation?
