SERAP drags INEC to court over N800 billion APC governors campaign fund

SERAP has filed a lawsuit against INEC at the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking the court to compel the commission to investigate allegations that APC governors are diverting N800 billion from their FAAC allocations to fund President Tinubu's re-election campaign. This is not a small allegation. N800 billion is more than the entire capital budget of some states for a whole year.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2026, was filed last week. SERAP is asking for an order of mandamus to force INEC to demand full disclosure from the APC and the affected governors on this campaign fund, including the identities of donors and the lawful sources of the funds. They are also asking INEC to review compliance with Section 91 of the Electoral Act by all political parties in this election cycle.

SERAP's argument is clear: opaque political financing fuels corruption and undermines democratic legitimacy. Nigerians have a constitutional right to know who funds political parties and candidates. If these allegations are true, we are looking at state capture using public resources. INEC cannot keep looking away. The question is: will the court compel INEC to act, or will this join the long list of cases that disappear into the Nigerian legal system?
