The one thing Nigerian parents can't forgive you for

My mum called me yesterday. First thing she asked was not about my health, not about my job. She asked if I have paid my tithe this month. I said mum I am still figuring out how to pay my rent in this economy. She said God will provide but the church needs the money now.

I have been thinking about this. Nigerian parents have this hierarchy of sins. Murder? They will pray for you. Armed robbery? They will visit you in prison. But tell them you stopped going to the monthly harvest and they will disown you. The church has a stronger grip on their hearts than any child ever will.

I calculated it once. If I gave my mum's church the same amount she gives in tithe and offerings every year, I could buy a small car. But she will tell me the car cannot save my soul. I just want to know one thing. Are there any other children out there whose parents care more about their church attendance than their actual wellbeing?
