The way Nigerian parents greet visitors is a whole drama production
4 months ago
I went to visit my friend in Surulere last weekend. Before I could sit down, her mother don start. She said, Ah, my daughter, you don come o. Welcome, welcome. Then she shouted for the girl to bring juice, bring biscuits, bring everything.
My friend bring one small bottle of Hollandia yoghurt and one pack of McVitie's. Her mother look at the thing like she commit crime. She say, Is that how you receive person? Go and buy meat pie from Mama Bose. My friend say, Mummy, she said she doesn't want anything. The mother say, Shut up. You want person to think we are suffering in this house?
I just dey laugh inside. The whole thing took 20 minutes. By the time I left, I carried yoghurt, meat pie, groundnut, and one sachet of pure water. My bag was heavier than when I came. Nigerian parents will bankrupt themselves to prove they are not suffering. Who else's parents do this?
