The day my landlord tried to evict me using a law he made up himself
4 months ago
I was sitting in my parlor on Sunday afternoon when my landlord knocked. I thought he came for the usual complaint about my generator noise. Instead, he handed me a handwritten notice that said I must vacate within 7 days because I was "disturbing the peace of the compound."
My brother, I looked at the paper and laughed. The man wrote "Section 27 of the Landlord and Tenant Act" as his authority. I have read the Landlord and Tenant Act cover to cover in my 26 years at the High Court. There is no Section 27. There is no Section 27 in any Nigerian law I know. The man just created his own law and wrote it down with pen.
I told him, "Oga, bring your lawyer. Let him explain Section 27 to me in open court." He looked at me like I was crazy. Na so he just collected his paper back and walked away quietly. Since that day, he has not said one word to me about vacating. The lesson? Know your rights. Some people will write anything on paper and expect you to obey because they are the landlord.
