I Prayed for 7 Years for My Son to Walk. The Day He Did, I Could Not Thank God.

I am a 42-year-old woman from Kano. My son, Musa, was born with a condition that left his legs weak. Doctors said he might never walk properly. From the day he was born in 2017, I prayed. Every morning, every night, every Friday at the mosque, every time I saw a beggar on the street. I begged Allah to heal my son.

Seven years. I fasted extra days. I gave sadaqah until my husband complained. I went to every mallam who said they had a prayer that could move mountains. I cried until my eyes were dry. People in our neighbourhood knew me as the woman who never stopped praying for her child.

Last year, when Musa was six, he started walking. Not perfectly, but he could stand and take steps. The day he walked from the living room to the kitchen on his own, my mother was crying, my husband was shouting praises. But me? I sat down on the floor and I could not say a word. Not because I was not happy. Because I realised something I had been running from for years.

I had spent seven years begging God for something that was already in His plan. I did not pray to know His will. I prayed to change it. And when my prayer was answered, I felt hollow. Like I had wasted years trying to force my hand into a door that was always going to open at the right time.

Now Musa is seven. He runs around the compound like any other child. I am grateful. But my faith changed that day. I stopped praying for specific outcomes. I just say, 'Your will, not mine.' Because sometimes the prayer is not about getting what you want. It is about learning to trust what you already have.
