I am a 38-year-old woman in Benin City. Married for eleven years with two children. My husband is a good man, but he has one problem: he believes a woman's money is for the family and a man's money is for himself. I told the bank teller to send all statements to my phone, not the house. Omo, the guilt was heavy at first. I would wake up at night and think, 'If he finds out, what will he say?' But then I remembered the year I wanted to travel for my mother's burial in Delta State and he said we could not afford it , then bought a 200,000 naira sound system the next week. Something shifted inside me. I stopped feeling guilty and started feeling smart. Now the account has 2.8 million naira. I have never touched it for anything except emergencies. My sister's child needed school fees last term? I transferred from that account. My own daughter needed a medical test that my husband said could wait? I paid from that account. He does not know. He cannot know. If he finds out, it will be war. But I have learned something: a woman who cannot hide a little money in this country is a woman who will suffer in silence. I am not suffering.
