The Minister of Works, David Umahi, finally broke his silence yesterday on the death of Mary Habila, the staff member who died at his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. And the details he gave at a press conference in Abuja are genuinely disturbing.

According to Umahi, Mary spoke with her boyfriend at the hour of her death. She complained that she was bleeding from the nose. The boyfriend told her she needed to report it, but she said the bleeding had stopped. He then said he would not continue the conversation because talking would increase the bleeding. She pleaded with him — she said, 'Don't cut the call.' He cut the call anyway. Three minutes later he called back, and she was not responding.

This is the part that stays with me. Mary had told her boyfriend she intended to take a bath before communication ceased. A young woman, bleeding, asking her boyfriend not to hang up, and he hangs up anyway. Three minutes later she is gone. We are all quick to point fingers at the minister, but what about that boyfriend? What do we say about a man who cuts the call of a woman who is bleeding and begging him to stay on the line?
