Men who say 'I don't want a working wife' are just afraid of competition.

I was in a meeting last week and one of the senior directors, a man, said openly that he prefers a wife who stays at home. He said it with such confidence, like it was the only reasonable position. I just sat there and said nothing, but inside I was thinking, wallahi, this is why our girls are running to Lagos.

From where I sit in Abuja, I see so many capable women who are told to shrink themselves for marriage. The policy says one thing, the reality says another. My own husband married me knowing I was a career woman, and Alhamdulillah, we make it work. Not because he is weak, but because he is secure enough to handle a woman who can hold her own.

If your ego cannot survive your wife earning more than you, that is a you problem, not a her problem. A woman who works is not a threat, she is a partner. So tell me, why are Nigerian men still so uncomfortable with successful women?
