I found out my father has been paying my sister's school fees with my mother's savings
4 months ago
My mother sells fabrics at Ariaria Market, Aba. For 15 years she has been putting money in a savings group, the one where women contribute every month. She told me it was for my sister's university. I believed her.
Last week my sister called me crying. She said the school fees for her second semester at UNN was not paid. I asked my mother. She said she checked her savings and the money was gone. My father had been withdrawing small amounts for years. He told my mother it was for school fees. But my sister never saw a kobo.
My father is a spare parts dealer at Ladipo. He has a second family in Ibadan. Two children. A woman who calls him husband. My mother does not know this part. I found out from a friend who saw him at a wedding with them. I have not told my mother. I do not know how. Every time I look at her counting her remaining goods to sell, I feel like the ground is moving under my feet.
