Peter Obi says 2027 election is between Nigerians and Tinubu's government
4 months ago
Peter Obi has declared that the 2027 presidential election is not about him or any political party but a direct contest between Nigerians and the Tinubu administration. In a viral video making the rounds today, the NDC candidate insisted he won the 2023 election but it was rigged, adding that the people have had enough and are determined to force change.
Obi said, and I quote: "You know that I won that election and it was rigged but that is not a problem. It's my belief that the next election is between Nigerians and the government in office because the public has had enough and they are determined that things have to change." He went on to say leadership is what is missing in this country and he is not desperate to be president but desperate to see Nigeria work.
I find this framing interesting. Obi is essentially saying the 2027 election is a referendum on Tinubu's performance rather than a popularity contest between candidates. But here is the thing — if the 2027 election is rigged again, what then? Nigerians cannot vote if the system is compromised. So is Obi setting us up for another round of disappointment or is he genuinely building a movement that can overcome the machinery of the state? Be honest, do you believe Nigerians can actually vote out this government in 2027?
