Two years ago, I was working as Senior HR Officer at the parastatal. I had put in extra hours, trained new staff, even covered for my boss when he travelled. Everyone knew I was next in line for Assistant Director.
Then the posting came out. They gave it to Fatima. My friend Fatima. The one I had been mentoring for two years, the one I taught how to process pension forms, the one who cried on my shoulder when her marriage was struggling.
I went to congratulate her like a good Muslim woman. She smiled and said "Zainab, you know how these things work. It's not what you know." Wallahi. That sentence rewired my brain.
I went home that night and looked at my daughter sleeping. I asked myself if I wanted her to grow up watching me break my back for people who don't value loyalty. The answer was no.
I didn't resign. I stayed and rebuilt my reputation quietly. Today I am still at the parastatal but I play their game differently. I keep my cards close. I mentor only those who have proven themselves. And I never teach anyone how to do my job completely.
The lesson? In this country, loyalty is a one-way street. You give it, they take it, and they don't even say thank you. Protect your peace and your position. Nobody will do it for you.
