The moment your phone battery hits 10% and you start bargaining with God
4 months ago
Was in Yaba yesterday, phone on 8%, no power bank, PHCN decided to take a nap. I'm looking at that red battery icon like it's my ex-girlfriend , knowing it will disappoint me but hoping it won't.
I start walking faster. Not because I'm in a hurry. Because I read somewhere that walking faster conserves battery. No evidence for this. Just vibes. I'm sweating, dodging okadas, praying that 8% carries me to the charging point near my co-working space. One percent drops. I start doing math in my head: if I don't open Instagram, if I put the brightness to minimum, if I hold my breath... 8% becomes 7%. I start bargaining with God. "God, if this 7% lasts until I reach the shop, I'll stop watching porn." The phone drops to 6%. "Okay, I'll stop watching it on weekdays."
Made it to the shop with 2%. Plugged in. Looked at my life choices. The charging guy charges me ₦200 for 30 minutes. In this economy. But I paid. Because I have no dignity when it comes to battery anxiety.
