The day my code almost cost me my US job and I had to beg my rival

Last year around August, I was working on this API integration for a US client. The spec was clear on paper, but somewhere between the product manager's call and my Jira ticket, something got lost. I built the whole thing assuming one data format, but the client's system used something completely different.

By the time the error showed up in staging, we had already promised them a demo the next morning. My CTO sent me a Slack message that just said "We need to talk." My heart dropped straight to my stomach.

I sat there at 2am in my VI apartment, generator running, staring at error logs. The worst part? The one person who could help me fix it was a guy I used to compete with at our old fintech. Tunde. We had history. He once called my code "academic" in a standup and I never forgot it.

I swallowed my pride and called him at 3am. He picked up on the second ring. I explained the situation and he just laughed. Not a mean laugh, but the kind that says "I've been there." He walked me through the fix in 20 minutes. No lecture. No "I told you so."

The demo went well. I sent Tunde a proper thank you the next day. My CTO never brought it up again, but I learned something. Pride is expensive. In this economy, you cannot afford to let ego cost you your bread. Sometimes the person you think is your enemy is just waiting for you to ask.
