Peter Obi's INEC comment is giving me mixed feelings
4 months ago
So Peter Obi was in Germany and somebody asked him about INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan ahead of 2027. His answer? That nobody can decide if a referee will do right or wrong. He said he has not even met Amupitan since the man was appointed.
Now I get the logic. Obi is saying the people have the power to decide, that if we refuse to do the wrong thing the system cannot force us. But abeg, this answer is too soft for me. We are talking about an INEC chairman in Nigeria where election rigging is practically an institution. You cannot just say 'the people can decide otherwise' and leave it at that. What concrete steps is he taking to ensure Amupitan does the right thing? What engagement with civil society? What legal strategies?
I am not saying Obi should go and fight INEC physically. But this hands-off approach to the referee when the match is already fixed does not sit well with me. Be honest, are you comfortable with this level of trust in a system that has failed us repeatedly?
