I was 27, working as a cashier at a small electronics shop in Enugu. The owner, Mr. Ebere, was a good man, always paid on time, never shouted. But I had a girlfriend, a baby on the way, and my landlord was threatening to lock us out. This was 2021, during the dry season, and I was desperate. For three months, I had been skimming from the daily sales. Small amounts at first,500, 1,000 naira, but soon it became routine. I would record lower sales in the ledger and pocket the difference. By the time I stopped, I had taken exactly 1.2 million naira. I remember the number because I counted it one night in my room, sweating under the fan. The day Mr. Ebere called me into his office, I thought it was over. But he just said, "I'm promoting you to assistant manager." He trusted me more because I never complained. Omo, I almost broke down there. I wanted to confess, but the words stuck in my throat. I used the money to clear my rent, buy baby things, and pay my girlfriend's hospital bills. I quit six months later and moved to Onitsha. But every time I close my eyes, I see Mr. Ebere's face, that trusting smile. I have not slept well since 2021. The lesson I carry is simple: some debts cannot be repaid. You can run from a place, but you cannot run from your own head. If you are young and broke, do not let the pressure make you steal. The money will finish, but the guilt will stay with you forever.
