El-Rufai is paying the price for helping Tinubu become president
4 months ago
Political analyst Imran Wakili posted on his X account yesterday that President Tinubu and the APC have betrayed Nasir El-Rufai, and honestly, I find it hard to disagree with him. Wakili pointed out that El-Rufai was one of the principal bridge builders who helped Tinubu reach Aso Villa and Uba Sani emerge as Kaduna governor. One of these men publicly called El-Rufai a mentor, while the other begged him not to walk away but to stay and help deliver the Renewed Hope agenda.
Now look at where El-Rufai is today. Sitting in the custody of anti-corruption agencies. This is the same man who used his political capital to build alliances across the North for Tinubu's victory in 2023. The same man who could have walked away but stayed because he was asked to. And this is how they reward him? Wakili said history cannot be rewritten, no matter how hard anyone tries to distort it. Facts remain facts.
I have watched Nigerian politics long enough to know that loyalty in this country is a one-way street. You help someone get to power, and the moment you become inconvenient, they throw you under the bus. El-Rufai is not a saint, I know that. But the pattern is clear. When will our politicians learn that the people they use to climb the ladder will eventually be the ones they push off the top? Or do they already know and simply not care?
