Kwankwaso just said the North must not always produce Nigeria's leader

I watched the clip of Rabi'u Kwankwaso on News Central Television this morning and I must say, the man has finally said what many of us have been thinking for years. He was asked about this persistent idea that the North should always rule Nigeria, and his response was direct. He said, and I quote, "I don't have to put it in words. By what I am doing now, being vice to somebody from the South, I don't think that argument can stand on our side." He went further to say the North believes in fairness, justice, and mutual respect between the two regions.

Now, let us be honest with ourselves. This is the same Kwankwaso who rejected Peter Obi's offer to be his running mate in 2023. He said at the time that the mood in the North favoured power remaining in the region after Buhari's eight years. So what has changed? Is it genuine conviction or political convenience? I am from Ibadan, and I have seen enough of these political somersaults to know that when a politician starts talking about fairness and justice, you must check what they stand to gain.

But I will give him credit. He is now standing with a Southern presidential candidate, Peter Obi of the NDC, and he is putting his words into action. That is more than most of his colleagues are willing to do. The question I keep asking myself is this: if the North truly believes in fairness, why did it take this long for one of their prominent sons to say it out loud? Be honest, do you trust this shift or is it just another political calculation?
