I Lost Two Years of My Life to Gambling. This Is How I Finally Stopped.
Back in 2022, I was 29, working as a security guard in Abuja. The pay was 45k a month, and I had a wife and a two-year-old son to feed. That was when I discovered betting , not the small football pools, but the online slots that promised instant money.
It started small. I would put 500 naira, win 2k, feel like a king. Then I started chasing losses. By the end of that year, I had borrowed from everyone , my mother, my younger brother, even my wife's savings for our son's school fees. I would tell her I was going to work, but I would go to a betting shop in Gwarinpa and sit there for hours, watching the numbers spin, my heart pounding.
The low point came in March 2023. I had not paid rent in five months. My landlord gave me a quit notice. My wife found out about the debt when she went to pay school fees and the account was empty. She cried so hard that night, and I just sat there, unable to say anything. I had 1,200 naira in my pocket and I was still thinking about placing one more bet to recover everything.
What saved me was my pastor. Not the one with the big church , a small man who ran a fellowship in a garage in Lugbe. I went to him because I had nowhere else to turn. He did not shout or judge me. He just said, 'Brother, you are not fighting addiction. You are fighting poverty and shame. The betting is just a symptom.' He made me delete all the apps in front of him, and he gave me a job , cleaning his church compound for 15k a month. It was humbling. I did it for six months.
Today, I have paid off most of the debt. My wife and I are still together, though the trust is not fully back. I still feel the urge sometimes , that voice that says 'just one more time.' But I remember the look on her face that night. That is stronger than any jackpot.
If you are in this thing, please tell someone. Not your friend who also gambles. Tell someone who will hold you accountable. And delete the apps. The house always wins.
