Peter Obi says Tinubu should retire in 2027. He is right.

Peter Obi came out yesterday and said what many of us have been thinking but were afraid to say out loud. He said President Tinubu should retire in 2027 and that Nigeria needs fresh leadership. I have read the statement carefully and I must say, the man has a point. When you look at the state of the economy, the exchange rate, the hardship in the land, it is clear that we cannot continue with the same faces and expect different results.

I know some people will say Obi is just positioning himself for 2027. That is politics, nobody is naive about that. But the substance of his argument is what matters. He is not saying Tinubu should step down immediately, he is saying the president should consider retirement after one term. That is a reasonable position for a man who will be 75 years old by 2027. Even the strongest horse needs to rest eventually.

The people who will disagree with me are the same ones who say continuity is important. But continuity of what? Continuity of hunger? Continuity of naira falling? We have tried the old guard for decades and we are still where we were. Maybe it is time to let someone else try. Be honest, are you really satisfied with where Nigeria is today?
