I caught my mother-in-law stealing from my wife's savings for years
3 months ago
My wife, Bisi, has been saving money in a secret account since she started working five years ago. She wanted to use it for our children's school fees and emergencies. I never touched it, not once.
Two weeks ago, I needed to check something on her phone and saw a bank alert. Withdrawal of ₦350,000. I asked Bisi, she said she didn't do it. We checked the transaction history together. Almost every month for the past two years, someone had been transferring money out. The same day each month, ₦50,000 to ₦100,000 at a time. Total over ₦800,000 gone.
Bisi called her bank. The transfers went to her mother's account. Her mother, Mama Yetunde. The same woman who prays for us every Sunday and asks God to bless our home. Bisi confronted her. Mama said she was "keeping the money safe" because she didn't trust Bisi's husband. Me. She said I would waste the money. The thing is, I never even knew the account existed until that day. Bisi hasn't spoken to her mother since. She cries at night and I don't know what to say. Family is supposed to be your safe place, but sometimes the knife comes from the hand that feeds you.
